Creating Your Dream Job

“So it would be going through the five pillars that we use to create your dream job. You go through them with a lens of I want to gain clarity around my professional fulfillment engagement needs. So as I'm looking at job descriptions, as I'm interviewing, as I'm talking to the company, I am listening for and intentionally matching to these five. Recognition and reward: How do you want to and need to be recognized and rewarded? So for example, if you want verbal praise, how are you going to make sense of the culture of your company that you're looking at joining? Are you going to ask for it?

Then that recognition of your skills and strengths. So we ultimately believe that strengths magnify performance, and you are much happier, more engaged from working from them. We want to be looking at job descriptions because we know you're going to be happier. Then, think about your relationship needs. Do you want a remote environment? Do you want hybrid? Or, do you want to be in the office? And how is that going to support your social and emotional well-being needs?

Then, think about the long-term. What are your long-term career goals? Where are you today? And how does this next job, this next position, help you develop skills so that you can advance? And then the last piece is, how do you think about work? Is it a paycheck? Is it a career? Or is it more of a job that brings meaning and purpose?”

Rhythm and Movement in Nature

Nature is such a powerful influence in my life. And in two really fundamental ways. One, the rhythms. So we have four seasons, and in each season, nature has a very specific purpose. And balance between day and night does not exist throughout the year, only at certain times. I think if we can look to the example in the seasonality of nature, it can inform our lives. So right now it's winter, it's cold, I'm in North Carolina, you are in a much warmer place, and I have jealousy about where you are. Winter, from a nature perspective, is about hibernation, going deep, the roots are coming into self-reflection. It’s not a lot of outward energy, that consolidation so that the tulips come up in the spring and the trees bud and then spring. Then we move into the abundance of summer and then the harvest. You can think about the rhythms of nature in terms of your life, such as rest and recovery. When do you plant seeds? When do you harvest seeds? All of that has been very helpful for me.

Respite

“The second is that it has always been a respite. For me, it's always been, the woods and trails are just quiet and peaceful. And I love that. And movement. When I think about being outside, there's always movement. And movement has always been important, I like to stay healthy. But it's the movement of the body that helps move my ideas. So when I was writing the second book, and I get stuck, you gotta go run it out. And I plan it, just go, and see what comes up. Now, half the time, the ideas were complete and total crap, but something came up I can at least work with and then massage. So it's a place to think and reflect, leave it on the road. There are many a day when it hasn't been a great day, you just gotta leave it out there. You can run it out, leave it on the trail, leave it on the road, and you can go home and greet your family and be in a much better mood.

Aligning with Nature

“I would go back during to the seasons, where can you do one thing in each season that aligns with what nature is doing. So for example, right now in winter, one thing that I'm intentionally trying to do is more rest, and taking one short nap. Twenty minutes, just to rest, even if it's just closing my eyes, because winter is about resting and renewal from the inside out.”
