Get a PHD in YOU

“As anyone who has gone through a tough time or crisis, I didn't know how it would shift and what would happen in my life. But I did know, and I did trust, that if I did some really deep inner work…that's actually why I wrote Get a PhD in You. Because after the 15 years of this recovery, work and coaching, I was like, Holy crap, I feel like I just did a freaking PhD. Why don't we study the one thing that we're going to be with our whole lives? That's ourselves.

So literally, I was at a support group meeting, and I came out and I felt really embodied and good in myself. And wow, it just took a long time. That's when I realized I've got to write this because I want everyone to be able to feel this way. So I think the embodiment, the somatic changes, the cellular shifts, I think it happened simultaneously. For me, it was dealing with food, I could tell the differences. The culprit for me is sugar. I used to joke, it's like shooting up. Sugar is a total drug for me. So when I took it out, I started to feel better, I started to feel different, I got clear headed. We know it's like detoxing. As time went on, the whole rewiring started to happen. It's a gift today, so much of that it's not perfect, it's not that I don't still struggle with food sometimes. But it's minor, it's minimal. It's beautiful, its attributes to the potential of humanity, that we can change beliefs, we can change behaviors. I do believe in bringing in a spiritual aspect as well. And to me, nature is is highly spiritual and connected. So we have the ability to transform and shift anything, I really I know that.”

Nature as a Teacher

I think it's helped in a multitude of ways. Getting outside and taking a daily walk was non-negotiable. There's the movement piece, the physicality of literally being engulfed by nature, we know it is so healing and helpful. I also find it to be super helpful metaphorically.

When I started growing my business, there weren't as many coaches. It hadn't grown the way it has now. And I actually think it's amazing, it's grown. We could use more coaches on the planet. I’m glad there's so many coaches, but I remember I was just like, oh, but there's already a coach doing that. I was walking and I'm like, wait a minute, look at all these trees, they are all super tall. They all have room. In fact, I got really into trees. There's a couple documentaries on the life of trees and how they support each other with root systems. These trees all stand, have their space, are doing amazing things, adding oxygen, homes for bugs and plants, and birds. They're not comparing or competing. That's human, they're not doing that. And those routes that they're sharing, they're sharing nourishment, they're sharing resources, and I was just like, oh my, that is my teacher.

Those trees are my teacher. So how am I going to be like that? How am I going to support other people doing something similar? How am I going to share resources? How am I going to be like that? Because honestly, they don't have any stories. They don't have any crazy beliefs. They haven't been brainwashed or programmed to thinking there's not enough. They are just abundant. They just grow and heliotrope towards the sun. They do what they do, they get what they need. I think they're incredible. And that for me, it's really interesting.”

changes in nature

Nature has just been… such a teacher. It really has changed my life. I get a lot of lessons every time I walk outside. I actually asked before the walk like alright, nature, show me with the lesson today. I think that's my lesson plan. There's so much on the internet, it's great. Go outside, go take a walk, go look around. Notice the way nature is behaving and what they're doing, by the way, nothing is ever the same. That's another great lesson. Everything is changing in nature. So hello, we're supposed to change. It helps remind me who I am, and who I want to be. And it's inspiring. I take a lot of notes and inspiration from what Mother Nature is doing.”
